While Kareena Kapoor-Arjun Kapoor starrer Ki & Ka has opened on a strong note at the box-office, the film’s reviews haven’t exactly been too encouraging. R Balki’s latest movie breaks the gender stereotype – its lead characters seem to enjoy a role reversal of sorts. Many may say it’s an interesting concept. But look closely and you’ll see how the director seems to have a pattern for role reversal.

Cheeni Kum

The term ‘marriageable age’ is something that Indians take very seriously. However, Balki turned that notion on its head. Cheeni Kum gave out the message that age is no bar for love – 34-year-old Nina (Tabu) was shown falling in love with 64-year-old Buddhadev (Amitabh Bachchan). Are you shocked already? Here’s the bigger twist. Buddhadev was shown older than even Nina’s father!

Paa

Amitabh and Abhishek Bachchan had already been seen together in films like Bunty Aur Babli, Sarkar and Sarkar Raj. So Balki decided to change things up when he cast them in Paa. No longer was Big B playing the father to Bachchan Jr. In Paa, Amitabh played the role of Abhishek’s 13-year old son Auro, who suffers from Progeria. A stroke of genius, this.

When a film revolves around a superstar and the film’s cast includes Big B, you’d assume that Bachchan plays the superstar. Right? Wrong. Shamitabh saw Dhanush play a superstar and Bachchan essayed the role of a failed actor who lends his voice to the mute Dhanush.

Ki & Ka

The man is the breadwinner, the woman runs the household – it’s as simple as that in India. Balki questioned this very stereotype in Ki & Ka – while Kareena Kapoor’s Kia is seen as an ambitious woman who climbs the corporate ladder, Arjun Kapoor’s Kabir is the stay-at-home husband.
